Marking 200 Years Since Constable Moby Washed Ashore

Monday 28th April 2025 marked a special moment in Burton Constable history, the bicentenary of the day that Constable Moby, a 60ft bull sperm whale, was discovered washed up on the shores of the Holderness coast.

To mark this remarkable anniversary, we travelled to Tunstall Beach, close to where the original whale came ashore in 1825. There, we paid tribute to Constable Moby in a creative and environmentally conscious way, by building our very own Moby sculpture from items found on the beach. It was a meaningful way to commemorate the anniversary and link the historical event to the surrounding landscape.

In recognition of this milestone, we are launching an £80,000 appeal to restore and preserve the remains of Constable Moby. The funds will go towards cleaning and consolidating the skeleton, ensuring its protection for years to come. Our future ambitions are to display the whale in a similar manner to the famous blue whale skeleton at the National History Museum, offering a new, immersive way for visitors to engage with this important part of local history.
