The Exhibition, called “All That Glisters is Not Gold’, is organised by one of the county’s most prominent art groups, East Riding Artists (ERA), and will run from Tuesday March 29th to Sunday May 22nd in the Hall’s new exhibition gallery.

Burton Constable Hall is a renowned Grade I listed Elizabethan country house near Skirlaugh in the heart of the East Riding.

ERA chair and former headmaster Larry Malkin recalls one particularly inspirational story about the hall which set the ball rolling for the exhibition theme.

“In 1977 I was seconded to Radio Humberside to make education programmes,’ he says. “This included taking children into differing situations and encouraging them to become presenters. The programme was called 'Child Reporter' and on one occasion we went to Burton Constable. The then owner, John Constable took us behind the scenes and into places that were not open to the public. This included the top floor where the servants’ quarters were. Whilst up their John shone a torch three stories down through a gap in the floorboards to highlight a golden slipper, which a dinner guest had lost when being involved in a game of hide and seek. The slipper had slipped off and had fallen down a gap in the walls. Despite all efforts to fish it out with fishing tackle and hooks, it remains there to this day. John died some years ago and sadly the story died with him - until I mentioned it to the present-day custodians, who hope to locate it once more.”

Visitors to the exhibition will be able to buy direct from the artists whose details will be available in the ERA brochure, or via the organisation’s website www.eastridingartists.co.uk
