The Staircase Hall
A Grand Ascent Through the House
In the Elizabethan house at Burton Constable, a modest staircase once connected the Great Hall to the rooms above. As the house expanded, a more impressive staircase was required, and in the 1760s Timothy Lightoler designed the present cantilevered staircase to serve the growing upper floor.
Over time, the Staircase Hall evolved into a space for display as well as movement through the house. Its current vibrant yellow colour scheme, chosen in 1972, gives the room a distinctive character, contrasting with earlier decorative schemes.
Among its most striking features is an ebonised grand piano by Erard, with fine bronze filigree, alongside sculpture and paintings that reflect changing tastes over time.
