The Burton Constable Foundation
Preserving History. Inspiring Generations
The Burton Constable Foundation is the independent charity dedicated to safeguarding Burton Constable Hall, its unique collection, and Capability Brown Parkland for the public to enjoy today and for centuries to come.
Protecting East Yorkshire Cultural Heritage
Established in 1992, the Burton Constable Foundation (Registered Charity Number 1010121) was formed to secure the long term future of the hall, its surrounding listed buildings, and over 330 acres of Capability Brown parkland.
While descendants of the Constable family continue to reside in the South Wing, the Hall, grounds, and extraordinary collections are managed as an independent charitable trust, dedicated to conservation, learning, and community engagement.
Our Core Pillars
Conservation and Care: Protecting over 700 years of history, from grand architecture and Chippendale furniture to rare scientific collections and historic textiles.
Education and Learning: Nurturing curiosity through talks, family workshops, guided tours, and special exhibitions.
Community Connection: Creating a welcoming destination for visitors, nature enthusiasts, and local groups to connect with regional heritage.
Environmental Stewardship: Caring for our historic Capability Brown landscape, native woodlands, and local wildlife habitats.
What We Look After
The Hall
Over 25 historic rooms featuring Elizabethan architecture, grand interiors, original period features, fascinating servant areas, and centuries of rich family history.
The Collections
Fine art, Chippendale furniture, rare books, historic textiles, an eighteenth-century Cabinet of Curiosities, an extensive herbarium collection, and the famous Sperm Whale skeleton.
Parkland & Outer Buildings
Over 330 acres of Capability Brown parkland, lakes, Orangery, and the Grade I listed Stable block with heritage stalls, Carriage House, and Indoor Riding School.
How Are We Funded
As an independent charity, every entry ticket, gift shop purchase, meal in the Stables Kitchen, event booking, and donation feeds directly back into maintaining Burton Constable Hall and Parkland. Caring for a Grade I listed estate is far from simple. From historic masonry to delicate textile repair, every restoration project requires rare specialist skills, careful planning, and significant financial support.
